Foreword

Hours & Minutes - BaselWorld 2017

 Sunil Karer

Dear friends,

This issue is all about Baselworld.  If it has to do with watches…it has to be at Basel. The largest watch fair concluded in March and we are all set to present the bouquet of timepieces that have caught our attention, in this very special issue.

Baselworld completed 100 years of existence this year The history of the show dates back to 1917 with the opening of the first Schweizer Mustermesse Basel (muba), of which only a section was devoted to watches and jewellery!

When Mr Christoph Brutschin, Cantonal Council Member Basel-Stadt, welcomed the guests to Baselworld, he addressed a very pertinent issue- that of digitization. Mr Brutschin stated that no matter what industry we look at, almost everything needs an "update." What he finds more reassuring is the fact that parallel to this strong dynamic in the digital landscape, the passion for the tradition of hand-crafted, high-quality watches and jewellery has for centuries held an irreplaceable place in the hearts of mankind. It is this that is heartening. The industry has welcomed smartwatches into its fold and infused classical watchmaking with it.

The issue is also filled with a lot of conversations, after all, Baselworld is as much about conversing with the watch world as it is about admiring beautiful timepieces. We showcase this dynamism of the horological world, in this issue. We have curated all kinds of watches right from the strictly classic ones to the latest smartwatches, for our readers. We hope that we are able to present the dynamism of the industry through this coverage.

Happy Reading...
