WMR - May 2017

Dear friends,

We are back from the mecca of watches – Baselworld 2017 with an array of novelties and trends that were launched this year. At Baselworld 2017, it became clear that the industry now has a greater understanding of consumers' shifting priorities and a willingness to look thoughtfully and respond to their desires. However, in a year of global uncertainty for the watch industry, companies continued to churn out head-turning pieces across the price spectrum. Despite this edition being slightly quieter than previous years, there was still a lot to see and plenty of trends to be examined such as chronographs, divers and homages to the past. Read on to know more as we caught up with some of the prominent brands to get their perspective of what’s in store for 2017-18.

From Switzerland to our very own country. The industry waits in anticipation for the much awaited GST soon to be levied in India. However, if GST is estimated to be around 18%, it would eventually benefit the watch industry. The watches can be priced with some uniformity thus eliminating the individual city taxes and various documentations that follow. This surely is a welcome development.

On the cover of this edition is the beautiful collection by Sonata designed specifically for your special day or to brighten up your trousseau. Watches for a cause - Montblanc officially introduced a new brand ambassador for India and Southern Africa, cricketing legend AB de Villiers, in Mumbai to launch the Maison’s new UNICEF collection. And there is more to add to the cricket fever this season. Hublot recently announced its newest friend of the brand, our very own Rohit Sharma at an event co-hosted with Johnson Watch Compony in New Delhi.

From new launches to watch events, the industry seems to be in moving ahead with an optimistic outlook. After a bleak year for the watch business, there should be some sparkle towards the third quarter.

Happy Reading...
