 Sunil KarerThis issue is a very special collector’s issue because we have attempted something that is very different, unique and offbeat. It is the premier initiative that any international journal has taken to bring you a special detailed report on the heart of the clock making horological business in a centre that is steeped in culture and tradition - Morbi. Various thoughts fleeted in my mind as I entered Morbi, the heart of the clockmaking business in India. But I was driven by the ardent desire to give a first-hand account and a bird’s eye view of what is happening in Morbi with sweeping changes and challenges flashing across the horological business.

On entering Morbi, one gets a sense of being a part of history, traditional craftsmanship and yet contemporary attitude. One starts encountering names that one has often heard of — Ajanta, Oreva, Samay, Rikon, Sonera, Sonam, Smart, Delta… etc. These brands have made their presence felt with their creativity and quality. And interestingly, the other product category that is quite popular in Morbi is tile manufacturing. As the clocks ticked, I realised that these companies continued to scale new peaks as they revealed optimism and ambitious plans to enhance their portfolio and market share in the domestic and international markets. Everyone is aware that the clock industry must move away from volume to high value.

The cover feature in this issue is that of a Gen-Next watch, Citizen Super Titanium, which is creating a revolution in the horological industry with a paradigm shift in design, material and attitude. Talking of attitude, Frédérique Constant Genève and Cohiba Cigars unveiled an aesthetic Limited Edition Wristwatches. Steeped in history, Greubel Forsey showcased The Double Tourbillon 30° Edition Historique. Panerai launched the Radiomir Orso Rosa 42 mm. Raymond Weil unveiled the Parsifal. And an interesting twist — Seiko is changing the face of time in India now.

With the festive season starting, the season of promotions starts. Omega unveiled the New Constellation through Brand ambassadors Abhishek Bachchan and Sonali Bendre Behl. Xylys was infused with fresh ‘irrational’ positioning!!! Tissot announced the winners of its international design contest. Titan in Phuket, Thailand - Vendor Partner Meet.

On the retail front, there was heavy duty action. BUBEN & ZORWEG opened an InShop Boutique in Dalian. Dewitt celebrated the “Grand Opening” of its flagship store in China. Titan’s: Pant Nagar Unit got a Long Service Award. And we present an inspiring Rendezvous with Manisha Sangani of Priority Marketing.

Economy is showing signs of hope and recovery. Swiss watch exports in the first half of 2010 have shown vigorous recovery. Indian giant Titan Industries’ income grew by 42% and net profit by 76.5% in Q1. The stage is set for a rocking festival time! Read on…
