WMR - September 2018

Dear friends,

Welcome to the new issue of Watch Market Review! We are just back from the HKTDC Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair that was held from 4-8 September 2018 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). We will explore the trends and timepieces that we saw here in the next issue, but we do give you a glimpse into the trade relations between India and Hong Kong, and how these are only set to grow further.

Talking about fairs, the one fair that is still on my mind is the Baselworld fair. The fair may have concluded in March and we’re looking forward to the next edition in 2019, but this time it has raised many questions. I explore my personal journey at the Baselworld in “My Basel Saga”. It has been four decades since I first attended the Baselworld fair. I have seen and experienced the evolution of the horological industry and the Baselworld fair over time. Thus, I wanted to articulate this journey and also take a critical look at what the future has in store. I do hope you will also enjoy looking at the fair through a different lens!

We’re in the midst of the festive season now. As you are aware, this is the time when people buy watches for gifting purposes as well as personal use. Watches are facing tough competition from other categories such as gadgets, smart wearables and so on, but still they remain to be timeless gifts.

We’re excited to bring to you lots of new timepieces through Time Unleashed and Essentials. We explore the Manero collection by Carl F. Bucherer. By expanding its successful Manero Flyback collection by adding a new retro-style version, the watchmaker has been reinventing an iconic watch with something new and exciting every time.

We are also in conversation with Jean-Christophe Babin, CEO, Bulgari as well as Lionel Favre, Creative Director, Jaeger LeCoultre. Both these features will tell you a bit more about two legendary brands that we love!

All this and more lies in store for you in this issue.

Happy reading!
