Within Watches

One of the biggest innovations in watchmaking has to do with the use of different materials. Right from precious metals, jewels and varied alloys, there has never been a dearth of new materials to try out within watch mechanisms or for the varied decorative aspects of the watch.

Sometimes, new materials also lead to new collaborations. For example, the Classic Fusion Italia Independent collection from Hublot, has been born out of a veritable fusion: the watchmaking expertise of Hublot, the limitless creativity of Italia Independent through its founder Lapo Elkann, and the treasures of the famous Italian tailor Rubinacci.

The story of this collection is interesting. It all started at the House of Rubinacci, that holds the most beautiful collection of fabrics in its archives. It was here, in more than 60,000 square metres of precious houndstooth, tweeds and other cloths that Hublot and Lapo Elkann found a collection of tartans, squared coloured wool weaves from the seventies, that they brought back to life by including them in the Classic Fusion as a chronograph. Tartan is thus the precious fabric that has been used on the dial and straps of this 45 mm timekeeper. This feat was possible due to Hublot’s capacity for technical innovation and willingness to experiment. Three different case materials have been chosen to be expressed in three different timepieces: Satin-finish and polished titanium, Satin-finish and polished black ceramic and Satin-finish and polished 18 carat King Gold. The HUB1143 calibre, automatic chronograph movement, beats in the watches from the collection. It is indeed amazing to see what a new material can add to a watch. This collection is an epitome of elegance and style, where the worlds of fashion and timekeeping merge in the most exceptional way!

Another collaboration that is also linked to using materials innovatively is that between watchmaker Roger Dubuis and Pirelli, one of the largest tyre manufacturers. Both the brands are very focused on new technologies and materials. They have wonderful formulas. The watchmakers worked with a team at Pirelli and this led to some really unique pieces. For instance, they devised a tourbillon with a strap that is made out of the material from the tyre of a winning race car! They invented a special formula and made a strap out of it.
