Time and Tide

CARL F. BUCHERER

WATCH-TALK WITH CEO SASCHA MOERI

Let us start by talking about Baselworld 2018…how has it been for you and what do you think is the future of the Baselworld Fair?

This year, Baselworld has been very successful for us, even more than the last few years. There is a positive mood in the market, as well as in the global economy. We are very satisfied with the business development in Europe, Asia and the United States. Regarding the future of the fair, I strongly believe that it will continue to remain the biggest event in the watchmaking calendar which lays the foundations for a successful year as long as Rolex, the Swatch Group, Chopard and Patek Philippe are represented in Basel. Of course, the purpose of the fair has shifted. Just about 5 or 10 years back, the fair was mainly about selling watches and obtain orders. Today with e-commerce and online selling, this happens throughout the year. However, the fair is still an important marketplace and platform, where we can
meet journalists & bloggers, suppliers, retailers, distribution partners and many people and friends from the industry. And it gives us the possibility, to present the brand and our novelties in a perfect way.

Have you seen any groundbreaking innovation in the Swiss Watch Industry over the last two years?

I am very proud that Carl F. Bucherer presents such an innovation this year! Our new masterpiece, the Manero Tourbillon DoublePeripheral is truly a world first. After four years of development, our new in-house caliber CFB T3000 combines a peripheral rotor-automatic winding system with a peripherally mounted tourbillon that appears to float. Customers want to be surprised by new, extraordinary models and features. Therefore, it is indispensable for us to strive for innovation. There are many brands that are coming up with new materials, functions, colours and designs. Of course, one cannot expect a breathtaking novelty from each brand every year. But for this year, we have it.

In terms of trends, have you seen anything particular in Baselworld this year?

I would say that the trend is that there is not one single trend. It is very market specific. What size, shape or colour becomes popular depends on the specific market and brand. Of course, sometimes there is more blue, more green, sometimes bold or sporty watches work, and sometimes classical timepieces work better. In general, one can say that each market is particular in itself. Maybe at the moment one of the most common trends are vintage models. Actually, we did vintage timepieces already some years ago and with a big success. The results are extremely positive.
