IN CONVERSATION WITH GAURAV MEHTA, FOUNDER

THE HISTORY…

It is a business that I started out of passion. I am not from a family of watchmakers, but I am very fascinated by watchmaking. When I was 12, my dad gifted me an HMT watch. I opened it and looked at the mechanisms inside. After that, I developed this bad habit of opening up watches! My first job was that of an insurance banker in London, and with my first salary I bought a watch for myself. Over a period of time, I collected about 300 watches, out of which 200 are HMT pieces! I also collected coins. One day I met a senior coin collector and he told me that I needed to collect as per a theme. I focused on King George watches. One day when I was opening a watch, I placed a coin inside it and a new watch was born! Everyone asked me where I had purchased it from! Thus, Jaipur Watch Company started off. That was 4 years ago.

HOW MANY WATCHES HAVE YOU SOLD?

The number is not very large since all are limited editions. We have sold about 700-8000, out of which 60-70 are bespoke. They start at Rs. 1,70,000 and some of them even cost upto Rs. 7,00000. The last one year has been a year of bespoke. We are very happy with the bespoke. Our clients are super HNIs all over India and Indians abroad.

INDIAN IN DESIGN…

It is a deliberate attempt. When you look at watchmakers in India, you don’t find a brand after HMT or Titan that stands out. I am trying to take fine Indian watchmaking to the forefront. A lot of people know us as a brand, and our sales have multiplied. The increase from last year is 350% more! The more people know, the more they want to try out. 50% of my sales happens in the same circle.
